Here We Go Again, Another Demi Lovato Album Review
Here we go again, after a year after her first album's release, Demi Lovato rocks the world with a completely new album with a completely new songs. How does her sophomore perform? Is it a here we go again, another "Don't Forget" or is it something completely new?
Lovato promised her fans back in January that she is aiming for a new sound. She stated that the bonus track, Behind Enemy Lines in her previous album's Deluxe Edition would be somewhat of a preview of her sophomore album. Lovato also promised that the album is going to be softer than "Don't Forget".
So in order to accomplish this, Lovato looked to artists like John Mayer. This is quite evident as Demi basically reinvented her style. It's no longer that very teenager-like and she can now successfully differentiate from other Disney stars. To be honest, most other Disney stars all sound the same. Not saying their music is bad, but it's so generic. I can't think of a Disney star that can be compared to Demi Lovato on her new album.

Lovato's new album offers a full range of music from highly soft and what she describes as more "soulful" music to edgy full rock outs. This time around there are more tracks that I find that stands out and makes it an even better record. The songs that stand out are: Here We Go Again, Solo, Quiet, Catch Me, Got Dynamite, and Remember December. This time, I'm not going to list every song and detail them base on the fact that there's way more songs that I like and the fact that I can only describe why I like these songs as a group, but I can't really differentiate each individual song from each other except for Quiet, Catch Me and Got Dynamite.
Quiet is notable just for the fact that the song is no way quiet. Sure it starts up slow, but it's the exact opposite right after with a full out rock and roll.
Catch Me is like Don't Forget from her first album. It's the soft track of the whole record and what I love is that you can feel Lovato's emotions even moreso than from her Don't Forget. Granted, Don't Forget got me the first time when I listened to it, I got quite sad even though I was having a great day. However, Catch Me is the soft sweet song instead of the soft breakup sad song, so I guess that's the difference. This song reminds me a lot about her acoustic performance of "This is Me" from Camp Rock. Albeit now it's more mature, but it's that sweet sound that makes me love this song a lot.
Got Dynamite is a song that I never could have predicted Lovato would make for the fact that Lovato doesn't seem to be the artist to create a song that sounds like Breaking Benjamin and Maroon 5. Like seriously, what? Really? I'm just completely floored when I heard it. I hope Lovato considers focusing more towards this song as her style.
Of course, it's rare to not hate at least one song on the album. For the last album, I didn't like Party and On the Line. For this album, that dubious title goes to World of Chances. Sure, it's a great song with a great melody but it feels like Lovato repeated the title of the song way too many times, felt too repetitive.
Actually, for a weird oddity, someone decided to add in So Far So Great (Theme Song to Sonny with a Chance). I'm not sure that it was a great addition. Sure, it's a great song for the show, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the album and it feels like it's out of place. I would like it if they didn't add that into the album and cut the album 2 minutes shorter.
For all Disney fans around the globe, this is a must-get album (I don't care if you're a Jonas or a Cyrus fan). For those who aren't Disney fans or are adults, I still recommend this album especially if you like pop or just rock and want to listen to something new. Lovato has definitely matured with her new album and is setting up a great precedence for future albums.
The first album was to really test the waters. One of my friends actually blasted me for going easy on her on my review of my first album, but it's just an artist's first album. At first, I was worried that having Lovato to change her style would make things worse and since I was going to be tougher on this next album, I would rate it significantly lower than her first album. However, this album is just great, one of the best albums I've heard in years. Of course it can't beat legends like Michael Jackson, but even these legends started somewhere right?
Before I give my final verdict, I will leave you all with the music video of her single Here We Go Again.
So what will the final verdict be? It really is a great album, but obviously there are room to grow upon. Yet, there are just so many songs I love on this album ... what will it be?
This album is a huge leap for Lovato from her first album that she earns tons of kudos for launching herself off the Disney tween platform. It's definitely more matured and edgier. It's a lot less of the Jonas Brothers/Miley Cyrus-like music that Disney stars tend to carry with them. For these reasons, I give the album a respectable A grade.
Rating: 8.5/10
